The combination of reading and math is always a fun way to sneak in some whole learning! This can be a great activity to complete during the school year with a whole class, or a fun way for parents to fit in a little learning with their kids in the summer!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a classic that children of all ages will enjoy. The adventure, the lessons about good character, the magical chocolate factory and the humor has made this book a family favorite since 1964. Follow Charlie Bucket as he tours the magical and secretive Chocolate Factory in his town with 4 other children. What secrets and wonders will they find inside the factory? Will they all make it out of Mr. Wonka's Factory in one piece?

This is a perfect book to read with your children this summer. If your kids have already read the book and seen the movie, grab the audio book to listen to in the car while traveling.

After you have enjoyed this fantastic book, have your children complete this worksheet, The Math of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

You can download the free PDF Worksheet here

Math can be fun and this activity will help students see the math that is everywhere, everyday.  There was a lot of math in Charlie Bucket's life, and equally, a lot of math in our lives, too. (Pun intended!)

If you listened to the audio book, see if you can answer the questions together as a family!

My youngest daughter and I read this book together, finished the worksheet and then took a tour of a local candy factory! I made sure we stopped and noticed all the math involved in the making and selling of the candy. We looked closely at the scales, the register, the prices and all the other math tools we could find.

After the worksheet is completed, be sure and ask your kids about the math in their lives. Let me know in the comments below what kind of responses they came up with! Math is all around us! And lucky for us, chocolate can be, too!
